Ferdinand Porsche died in 1951, so he never saw
the 911 sports car that so many people today see as the ultimate road
going sports car. He had however been active in automobile design and
modification since around 1929. He had used his expertise and design flare
to collaborate with the likes of Mercedes
and Auto Union on various successful projects. Perhaps his biggest single
achievement (certainly pre-war) was the project culminating in the design
of the Porsche
Type 60 in 1938, which was to become the Volkswagen
Beetle when it went into mass production after the war in 1945.
